Sexual Assault - Use your head to protect your body
The Department of Public Safety offers a Sexual Assault Prevention Lecture to groups of student, faculty and staff. We urge you to contact out department to make arrangements. Sexual Assault is the fastest growing felony crime in America.

• Be aware of your surroundings.
• Walk with a friend in well lighted areas.
• Use the Escort Shuttle to escort you to your vehicle at night.
• Remember the yellow Emergency Call Boxes located on campus.
• Have your keys in your hand while approaching your vehicle.
• Keep your doors locked all times.
• Check the back seat and floor before entering your vehicle.

How to report suspicious or Criminal Activity on Campus
You may report suspicious or criminal activity or other emergencies by dialing the campus police at 911. There are also 64 emergency telephones scattered throughout the campus that ring directly into the University Police Telecommunications Center. These telephones automatically register your location when you push the button to activate the phone.

Possession and use of Weapons
All University Police officers carry service weapons while on duty. By Nevada State Law, no one other than police department personnel may carry or posses firearms or any other weapons on campus. Those student residents who have brought firearms with them must check those weapons in at the Department of Public Safety for safekeeping.

Residence Hall Security
Access to residence halls are controlled by card access systems which restricts entrance to only those authorized to enter. Each residence hall is also staffed with a resident coordinator and numerous resident assistants, usually one per floor.

Tips for a Safe Campus
The following are some suggestions which will make your time on campus safer. These are presented out of concern for you welfare.
When walking or jogging:

• Go with someone
• Stay away from isolated areas.
• Try and stay near street lights.
• Hold your purse or briefcase tightly close to your body.
• A front pocket is safest for a wallet than a back one.
• Dress sensibly. tight pants, clogs, or heels make movement difficult.

If you're being followed:

• Cross the street or change directions.
• Keep looking back so the person knows you can't be surprised
• Go to a well lighted area. Enter a store, house, residence hall, class-room, or library - anywhere there are people.
• Notice and remember as much as possible about the person so you can give a good description later.

If you are held up:

• Don't resist. No amount of money is worth taking chances with your life.
• Notify the campus police or local police immediately. Try to give a description that includes approximate age, height, weight, and details on hair, clothing, jewelry, scars, tattoos - anything that is noticeable.

Where you live:

• Keep your doors and windows locked day and night.
• Don't let strangers in.
• Don't leave a door unlocked for someone planning to come back later.

Protect personal property:

• Engrave expensive equipment and valuables with an ID number.
• Don't store your purse in an unlocked desk drawer.
• Don't leave your belongings unattended in libraries, hallways, locker rooms, or classrooms.

If you are working late:

• Keep your office door locked.
• Lock all doors behind you when entering or exiting at night.
• Inform the Police.

In a car:

• Keep doors locked while driving.
• Don't pick up hitchhikers.
• Check the back seat before getting into a car.

Protect your car:

• Always lock your car and take the keys.
• Lock valuables in the trunk.
• Park in well lighted areas.

Report suspicious activity and vandalism immediately.
